The Mint Julep

Years ago my old friend K. Cooper asked me to write a mint julep recipe for a party he was having. Below is that recipe.

So whip up a drink(K. doesn’t like the word cocktail!?) and have a toast to Spring

The Mint Julep

“You need at least two big bunches of fresh mint. Put 1-2 cups of bourbon — I only use Maker’s Mark — in a pitcher with a 1/2 bunch of mint for about 12-24hrs. You can also add the mint straight to the bottle of bourbon if you think you will drink all of it. Make a simple syrup by boiling 2 cups of sugar into 2 cups of water and add a 1/2 bunch of mint as the syrup cools.
So that’s your prep.

Now fill your julep cup – sterling of course — to the top with crushed ice. Add 1 –2 jiggers (the big side if 2 sided) of bourbon and 1-2 jiggers of syrup. Fill the rest of the way with good, cold water and a little bit of torn mint. Toss this mixture back and forth a couple of times ending in your julep cup. Add a pretty sprig of mint and enjoy! (Responsibly, of course)Juleps are best made one at a time, that’s why I use the julep cups to mix instead of a shaker plus nothing gets as cold as a silver cup. I guess jiggers are a universal size, but I put 1-2 because some people like more bourbon than syrup and vice versa. So there you have it! I hope this gets you to julep nirvana. It is THE best cocktail you know, oops, I mean drink.”

The tooleshed “gimlet”

ingredients                                                                                       tools

Bombay sapphire gin                                                                    cocktail shaker

Simply limeade                                                                              double sided jigger

Fresh lime juice                                                                             highball glasses

Sugar

Pink grapefruit segments (fresh or from a jar)

Ice (preferably crushed)

To make 2 drinks

Sugar the rim of 2 highball glasses

Fill cocktail shaker with ice

Add

3 ounces gin

½ cup simply limeade

1 ounce lime juice

shake vigorously

pour into glasses

garnish with 3-4 grapefruit segments

enjoy!

Cartoon: Home Movies

Movie: Anything with Buster Keaton

Book: Hmmm, anything with lot of historical detail, or crazy fantasy worlds that are completely original…or time travel!

Author: Eckhart Tolle

Artist: Gustav Klimpt. There are soooo many, really, but Klimpt was the first artists that when I saw his paintings at a museum in Spain when I was young, I sort of imploded, and I think he was a genius! I know so much about him, its kinda creepy. I would love to have met him. Him and Abraham Lincoln…..oh yeah, not in a threesome kind of way….although…You know I kidding right? ….yes. totally kidding.

Dessert: Hmmm, anything lemony and tart and creamy

Cereal: Ew, cereal is sooo gross.

Fruit: Wild berries, especially the ones that make you hallucinate. No seriously we have a blackberry shrub in our yard, yum.

Drink: Margaritas!

Soap: Girl what? Hmmm, Something with goat milk or olive oil from the Mediterranean where I can fantasize that the woman who made it has kohl rimmed eyes and is all super dramatic.

Sunglasses: Prada makes some great tortoise shell ones, but I wear a pair of Diors that I looove.

Sport/team: Waste.of.time. Why watch a silly sport when I can paint?

Animal: My puppies Coco and Moxie. But I love elephants, always have. A baby elephant will make me pee myself, also sea turtles. Can you even deal with how cute they are?!

City or place: Any place that has my husband, is my favorite place on earth. Aside from that, I would say New York makes me so happy, but so does (or is it do?) the forests of North Carolina.

Coffee or tea? Coffee, especially Turkish coffee. The kind of stuff that makes your teeth look like a Charles Dickens character.

first concert: Metalica! In a limo, with all my friends for my sweet 16.
Band: don’t have one, but I like electronic music
Favorite Musician: Raul. Ok, he is imaginary, but my husband and I invented this famous Tambourine Soloist one day when we were at a restaurant where the sound system was so bad all you could hear of the music on the system was the clanky Tambourine. He wears all fringed outfits, so they move around while he dramatically plays the…..tamourreeeeeen. He also wears eye linner and a lot of turquoise rings on his playing hand. Oh, and probably some high healed boots. His recent album cover features just him, mid jump, fringe akimbo and his tambourine placed strategically over his…instrument. He recently was on the cover of Rolling Stones doing a spoof of the Lady Gagga cover, but with old timey pistols…I could go on.

Tool you can’t live without: Well, I am tempted to say Computer, but if I am being totally honest…toilet.

Will you tell us a joke? Gasp! What kind of woman do you take me for! Jokes are for people with loose morals. How dare you ask me that.

Would you draw for us a sketch or yourself or pet? I have attached a doodle I made last night from a crazy glue stain…it is my alter ego. A hunched old…flea? With a bowler hat and cigar who has an aching back. His name is Horace (my alter egos are almost always old men) and he takes his tea with nothing because cream is for sissies.

Coffee or tea? Circumstantial. Upon awakening and throughout the day, coffee- decreasing ratio of soy creamer to cowboy style with passing hours. Tea is super awesome too. I like the ritual of tea. Water boil, varieties, loose/bagged choices, steep, pinky finger extended, etc…(moroccan mint)
